One of the neatest things about our trip was getting to stay in the exact same house that we lived in on Cheatham Annex from ages 3-6ish (the house were converted to cottages for vacationers!) This meant that we got to show Bryan and CJ all of the cool adventures that come with living on base. From the vast amounts of wildlife to the old rope swing, the base has not changed very much in the past 20 years.
Monday- Finally arrived in Norfolk around midnight after a very loooong day of traveling. I don't think anyone was in bed before 2am.
Tuesday- Somewhat of a recovery day for everyone. Went for a run around base. Bryan tried to kill CJ by taking him on a 5 mile trail run involving jumping over fallen trees, etc. When asked how their run was we got quite different responses from both boys- Bryan "I could run forever." CJ "I stopped to look at a cool black slug."
Went to The Cheese Shop for lunch...The Cheese Shop was definitely a staple for us growing up, and I think there were only two days the entire week that we didn't end up there for lunch or dinner.
Spent a good majority of the day wandering around Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary. Since Colonial Williamsburg is frozen in time, not much had changed...but it's always a neat place to walk around and explore.
Wednesday- Dad was on a business trip prior to vacation and flew in on Wednesday morning. After we picked him up from the airport, we headed straight to the beach (with Cheese Shop sandwiches packed for lunch of course). I think everyone had a blast at the beach. A huge school of dolphins played right offshore the entire day. More dolphins than I ever remember seeing at the beach anywhere!
Thursday- Talk about EXTREME Busch Gardens. We pulled in the parking lot a little after 10am and left a little after 9:30pm. We have always been huge fans of Busch Gardens. You know it's going to be a fun day when John Lamb yells "ELMO" on the tram ride to get to the park. The park was practically empty for a summer day! The longest line we stood in was 20 minutes, and that was for the front row! Needless to say, we rode roller coasters until we all were exhausted, sick, or too sore. I was completely bummed that The Big Bad Wolf was gone, but apparently another roller coaster is being put in, so we'll just have to go back. Bryan also got to ride Mach Tower on one of the first days it was open! My favorite this time was Loch Ness Monster. What can I say? It was my first roller coaster ever.
Friday- Happy Birthday Mrs. Wright! Went to the Wright Beach House for a day of fun! Mrs. Wright's daughter and Jordan went to kindergarten together if that tells anything about our history. A much needed relaxing day after all of the walking from the day before.
That evening was very chill. Went to Cheese Shop for dinner, then Wythe candy for dessert where we got to catch up with Mrs. Emmett! Mom gave us each a $1.00 to spend on candy (exactly like she used to!) although I think we all ended up with more than a dollar's worth of candy.
Saturday- By Saturday I think it's safe to say we were all starting to get a little exhausted. The boys spent some time at the golfing range while the girls went shopping. We picked up the boys to head to lunch at the Yorktown Pub. Hours later.....okay, maybe not quite that long, but the GPS had the wrong address for the pub which meant lost tourist in a random neighborhood. Dessert was soft serve at Queen Ann's Dairy Shack. Then we headed off to the Oakes to meet up for Thai food for dinner.
Sunday- One of the cool things about this family vacation was that we got to take a road trip back to our parents house in PA. However, I did receive a pretty nasty shark bite(just a canine tooth bite) from the rental van which I still have a mark from. This trip may stay marked on me the rest of my life! Bryan and CJ grilled some steaks for dinner and we got all of our laundry done!
Monday- Monday morning we headed to the produce stand so Jordan and CJ could stuff corn into their suitcases to take back to Texas. Because we all know, "You don't want Texas corn."
